The Bella Vista Varsity football team heads to Vista Del Lago tonight to play the Eagles in their final scheduled game of the season. The season has certainly had its highs and lows, but the team has shown some impressive improvement on both si
des of the football.
To talk about the team’s season, their game against the Eagles tonight, and his personal injury rehab process, I had the pleasure of having a conversation with my good friend Austin Karley- a member of our varsity football team. Below is our Q/A(slightly edited for grammar):
Q: Thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview with me. My first few questions are just about some basic information. What is the team’s record as of right now?
A: Right now we’re 2-7
Q: What position do you play?
A: I play Offensive Line, some Defensive Line and also punt.
Q: What is the last record of some of your individual stats?
A: I haven’t had stats lately because I’m out for the season this year and missed half of last year. I probably had 5 tackles in 3 games played during my sophomore year.
Q: Got it. So how has the team as a whole improved this season?
A: It’s improved tremendously. Our offense has been doing much better as well as our Offensive line. We got a weightlifting/football class this year(all the schools in our area have had one for a long time) which gives us time during school to work on football, so we really got the program reset. We just need to keep being consistent with what we’re doing to keep us on track for next year.
Q. Awesome! How about some of the challenges? What are some of the challenges that the team has faced this season?
A: The most challenging thing for the whole team was probably improving our defense and not turning the ball over on offense.
Q. Alright I’d like to shift gears for a moment and ask some questions about your injury rehab process. So, first of all, what was your injury?
A: I blew my knee out and fully tore my ACL. (Happened midway through Sophomore year).
Q: What has the rehab process been like for the injury?
A: Physically it’s just been a very slow process, slowly getting out of physical therapy was great but it took lots of time and even more patience mentally. For football players in high school, the average recovery time is 9-12+ months after surgery.
Q: So, going through that, what are some ways that you have contributed to the team this season despite not being out on the field?
A: I’ve been able to help with film almost every game, which gives the players an awesome chance to see themselves after the game and keep getting better.
Q: Ok last question- Can we expect you to be back on the field next season and how can the team build off of the foundation built this season?
A: Yeah definitely, I’m super excited to return next year as well as do more in the offseason. The team needs to keep adding to what we’ve done in the season and just keep getting better.
Q: Alright, thank you so much for doing the interview and good luck against Vista Del Lago!
A: Thank you! Vista Del Lago is 2-7 just like us, so it should be a really good game. There may also be a home bowl game for us after this.
Austin will be cheering on his teammates from the sideline and making any possible off-the-field contributions tonight when the Broncos face the Eagles at 7:15 p.m. at Vista Del Lago. Best of luck to the team tonight and to Austin on the remainder of his injury rehab!
