The Varsity Boys’ Soccer Team is gearing up for their season! They already have played a number of preseason games to get back into the swing of things and are now beginning their regular season games. To talk about their offseason, the preparation that goes into games, and playing together as a team, I had the pleasure of interviewing players Nolan Brady and Diego Ramirez- who have both been awarded "player of the match" awards this preseason. Below is my interview with the two of them, slightly adjusted for grammar(but with the meaning preserved):

Q1: What goes into your preparation for the season, and then individual games?

Diego: Well, we have had many preseason practices where we put in a lot of work and built chemistry with each other. Before a game, we’ll go through basic warm-ups and stretch.

Nolan: Before the season starts, I try to get my fitness up, doing lots of running and such. Before each game, I always eat a good meal and drink lots of water and listen to music.

Q2: What is something that you have done well this season as a team?

Nolan: Well, we beat Del Campo 5-0, so that was awesome.

Q3: You have been awarded the player of the match award this preseason, what does that accomplishment mean to you?

Both said “not much, really” and laughed before answering the question.”

Diego: Well, it’s good but it is still preseason. It is good, but we have a long ways to go.

Nolan: Yes, it’s a good feeling but obviously the team is more important. It’s more important that we get the win than me winning player of the match.

Q4: What is something that the team as a whole can do better?

Nolan: Probably scoring.

Diego: Yeah, definitely scoring. Our composure in front of goals is definitely something we need to work on. And also, in the first five minutes with our backline we just collapse. We just have to work on being ready. But otherwise, we usually don’t get scored on that easily.

I also asked Diego specifically about what challenges came with him moving to Arizona midway through his freshman year and then returning to BV for his junior year:

Q: What were the challenges of spending a year in a different state and transferring back to Bella Vista?

Diego: Yeah, there were definitely some challenges mentally with going into a new environment and then realizing it was all kind of for nothing when coming back, but I think it’s helped me grow as a person being able to adapt to a new environment and it helped me to grow as a person and a player.

Nolan, Diego, and the team will head into the season with these mindsets as they gear up for their home game against Rio Americano on January 5th. Go Broncos!
