It is almost club season here at Bella Vista! Very soon, students will have a large catalog of student-run organizations to choose from, specializing in everything from specific interests to community service. Some of those clubs are completely new, created from the imagination of bold students. One of those new clubs is the Voice of Your Choice club, centered around giving students the opportunity to present about whatever interest they have.
The officers who will be running the club this year are Liberty Vincent (president), Charlie Caldera (vice president), Sofia Corzantes (secretary), and Erin Spratt (treasurer). To discuss their hopes and dreams for the club, and their plans to achieve them, I had the opportunity to sit down with Liberty, Sofia, and Erin. Below is our full interview, slightly edited for flow, grammar, and accuracy, but the meaning has been preserved:

Q: You all began to post on Instagram recently to gather interest in your club, so can you just explain to our readers what your club does?
Liberty: Voice of Your Choice is a presentation-based club where we allow our members to present topics of their interest- literally anything. We suggest informational topics and things that are really going to interest people or spread knowledge or awareness on things. We take promotional presentations and public speaking- it's very good public speaking practice as well. We want to appeal to people who maybe feel like they want to practice their public speaking or just are at a point in their life where they don't really have that vessel to speak about their interests.
Sofia: I feel like it's also a club for people who feel like they just have ideas that they want to get out, and people who also are just passionate about certain topics. I know there's a lot of people out there who have things that they're really interested in that they don't usually get to share, so this is just kind of an outlet where they can go to share about anything that they would like.
Erin: And this is an excuse for them to like to do some research and learn about something that they're interested in and then create a presentation about it.
Liberty: So the outline of the process of our club is that we're going to take the first few minutes, maybe five to eight minutes, for our officers to explain future meetings, upcoming announcements, and introduce if anyone has potentially sensitive topics because we don't want to cross any boundaries with our members. For the rest of the time, the floor is for presentations. We'll allow time for questions between each presentation and you can select between two and a half minutes to ten minutes to present within our lunch slot. And you don't really need to worry about not getting a chance to present because we'll have weekly meetings and you'll have so many chances to present throughout the year.
Q: So with the premise of the club being talking about whatever you want, what would you personally talk about? What kind of specific interests do you have?
Liberty: I have a very deep honed interest in mycology [study of fungi] and I love spreading information and just what you can do with that. Bioremediation is the act of basically replenishing our environment and recovering our environment with fungus and that's something I'm interested in pursuing in my future in work, research in college, so I'd definitely touch on that topic.
Erin: For me, I'm interested in going into biotechnology. I'd like to explore more specific aspects of that sector as I'm planning that for my future. And I'm also really interested in meteorology and European history, which I'd like to make a couple of presentations on.
Sofia: Yeah, for me, I'm more of a person who really likes to just consider new ideas and have discussions with people, so I know one thing we're going to try to implement is being able to speak with others. Maybe someone does a presentation from one viewpoint and someone else can do a presentation from the opposite viewpoint and then there can just be discussion about that. So, my personal preference would be to do something like that.
Q: This is more of a general question, but what would you say to anyone who's starting a club this year? What kind of advice would you give?
Liberty: I would advise everyone to plan the club in a manner that you know you can stay motivated because we had a club before that didn't go as well as we would've hoped. A club can be a lot to take on and staying consistent with your members and meetings is really important to make it last. We're all seniors and I'm really excited about this club and it's really important to me that it can continue and in order for a club to continue, you have to set a strong foundation of "hey, we're meeting every week, we're meeting at this time" and consistency.
Erin: Yeah, for social clubs with a lot of members, the biggest thing is just that you need to recruit a lot of people and then make sure they know where they can get the information and they know when the meetings are, and most of the time when people fall out of clubs it's because they don't know that, so that's the most important part.
Sofia: Yeah, and I would also say "just do it" because a lot of times people will get an idea for a club and then they'll just kind of be like “ah, it's fine, I don't want to do that”, but the truth is if you do have an idea, especially if you're passionate about it, you want to take that chance and take action- especially if you're passionate. It will lead you to want to pursue the success of that club more, which will raise the quality of it.
Liberty: So I think between all of us, we would recommend consistency, accessibility, communication, and passion. Just love your club, basically.
Q: Awesome! If you can share anything, what do you have planned for your table on Club Day (9/18)?
Liberty: I think our club day is a little bit of a surprise, but we want to have a big poster. We're going to have some food, of course, and it's going to be super fun!
If you are interested in joining the BV Voice of Your Choice club, you can sign up for it on Club Day on September 18th. Their tentative meeting time will be on Fridays in room G3 (Mr. Chilcutt). The information for their Google Classroom and Remind is below. Best of luck to Voice of Your Choice and all other new and existing clubs at Bella Vista!
