The 2025 marching band season was a sweeping success for Bella Vista, with our band winning first place at almost every competition. That included in a win at the WBA Regional championships in Union City this past Saturday- their first championship win during their time competing in the WBA Circuit. They received a score of 80.95, shattering their previous WBA record. What is the cause for this success, and how do members of the marching band explain it?

This year’s show was named ‘Our World, A Canvas’. Throughout their show, the band portrays living art: color guard members dancing with paintbrushes, band members posing, and props full of art being revealed. The art displayed on the props and merchandise was drawn by local artist Alejandra Ruiz. The show is eye-catching and entertaining, including music from Encanto and A Beautiful Mind.
A summary of the reasons why our band won would be the fact that they had a well-written show and that they are simply just good. The show theme was palatable to the judges, and the marching band was able to execute it well. No marching band show is possible without people to perform it. In order to understand the success of the season, we need to understand the performer’s perspective.
One member says, “we definitely had skill and proficiency as an ensemble,” another adds, “it also never hurts to have a lot of seniors and great leadership”. The competence and experience of the band, combined with an effective leadership team, helped grow the performance after every competition. But skill and leadership aren’t enough to make a marching band winning-material. You can’t have a good team without a good attitude.
Guitar and bass player Joey Dippert explains that their success was “because of all of the energy the entire band had”. Another student shares, “we came in to have fun, and the success came as a byproduct”. The resilience and determination shown by the band members, as well as the positive energy they brought, contributed greatly to the success of the band.
As the season officially comes to an end, the band members are sad to see it go. After their last performance, band members could be seen crying, cheering, and embracing their friends. “Seeing people break down in tears because they were so overjoyed [by winning first] felt unreal”, one student recounts. Winning wasn’t the only thing the band members felt proud about, however. “The season itself was fun, not the medal that came from it,” one member reflects. Another student agrees with this, saying, “I enjoyed putting on the show more than anything. I'm always happy to play music, but this show specifically was very special to me”.
The Bella Vista Marching Band’s persistence, motivation, and passion resulted in school history, Bronco pride, and fond memories for members of the band. One student concludes his thoughts with, “our show explains the typical creative process, and how any idea, once brought to life, can become something truly amazing”. Indeed, what started as merely an idea for a marching band show developed into a wonderful piece of artwork.
